The
reigning Miss World, Alexandria Mills of the United States wrapped up her
worldwide travel and charitable duties to join the party. The 19 year-old won
the Miss World 2010 pageant after a controversy surrounding the venue of the
event.
Vietnam was to host the 2010 contest but
pulled out, leaving it to China to fill-in on an emergency basis. The pageant
is back in London this year, where it all started in 1951. Way back then 60
years ago, there were only 26 contestants, a far cry from the current crop of
stunners that hale from every corner of the world.
In London this week, the Miss World
contestants engaged in the final fast-track competitions that help narrow the
field when it comes to naming the 20 semi-finalists who will take part in the
worldwide broadcast Sunday night. It is estimated that one billion people will
tune in to catch the final winner receive her crown.
Fast-track events include the following
categories: Top Model, Top Designer, Talent, Beach Beauty and the most
meaningful of all, Beauty with a Purpose. It highlights the contestants'
charitable interests in their home countries as well as around the world.
Alexandria Mills landed in the top three
in 201 fast-track competitions in the Beach Beauty and Top Model categories, while
snagging the nod for the winning contestant in the continent mini-contests. She
was named Queen of the Americas.
The fast-track contests are meant to
narrow the beauties down to a more manageable circle of contestants when the 20
semi-finalists are named on Sunday night in the finals.
The top ten ladies in the 2011 Beauty
with a Purpose category highlighted specific causes and issues they intend to
take front and center should they be crowned Miss World 2011. They hail from
the following countries: Ecuador, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Philippines,
Scotland, South Africa, Spain and Zimbabwe.
Miss Zimbabwe's expressed interest in
her country's lack of clean water in many areas. Miss Ghana spoke of the lack
of proper health care for her fellow citizens, most particularly Ghana's
children.
As of this writing, two days prior to a
new Miss World being crowned, the Miss World-Philippines contestant, Gwendoline
Ruais has placed among the top 20 in the Beach Beauty, Top Model and Beauty
with a Purpose mini-contests. It guarantees her a slot in Sunday night's
semi-final round.
Her Beauty with a Purpose credentials
include the Model United Nations Assembly, an academic simulation of the United
Nations. Ruais subsequently chose to join the Human Rights Council, where she
was elected best debater.
The telecast and audio stream are available on various

stations in the participating countries.
